When I first read the prompt for the final I was not sure exactly what I was going to do. The only thing I really do online is browse social media and sporadically post on my blog and Etsy. Since we talked a good amount about social media and online privacy this semester I wanted to do something a bit different. I began thinking about how to talk about my Etsy and blog and experience using those sites and landed on making something about selling online. Online business has been booming, especially with COVID-19 leading to more consumers shopping online rather than in stores. It can also be an accessible way for people to begin selling their art or other handmade items. Some types of products have specialized marketplaces, like ones for art or clothing resale. I decided to make an infographic with some tips on choosing a marketplace and an overview of three popular sites.

I made my infographic on Canva.com and used the three sites to research information about pricing and tools. I personally use Etsy (and use Square POS for in-person transactions if I do a craft show). I have enjoyed it but their fees are a bit high, 8%+$.25 per transaction and $.40 per listing. The main benefit is that Etsy has an established base so if you learn about SEO (search engine optimization) and have thorough descriptions and good product photos you should be able to find some success. They also offer advertising on and off site. I am currently building a Square online store as well as I find they are more optimized for advertising through social media like Facebook and Instagram.

I think selling online is a lot of fun and an enjoyable way to create things that others might enjoy. Many people have fun hobbies and who does not enjoy a little extra money on the side.

(It is not all fun and games though, make sure you read up on sales tax and laws and how to properly report for taxes before you start selling. This advice varies state to state so I did not include it in this project.)
